ON THE ISSUES
Preservation First, Development Second
Martin County is unique in its rural and agricultural composition as well as its extensive conservation and park lands. The County Commission needs to be committed to preserving and maintaining the fundamental character of the County, or what is often referred to as the Martin County Difference. No resident I have spoken with wants to see Martin County evolve like the three counties to our south and St. Lucie to the north, where overdevelopment has and is leaving a wake of adverse societal and environmental impacts.
Safe Communities = Freedom to Flourish
Our police and firefighters play a vital role in keeping our community safe, and by providing them with the necessary resources and support we strengthen our community’s safety net. Having had the opportunity and privilege to run multiple 24 hour shifts with Fire Rescue I can attest to the necessity of having rescue trucks properly staffed.
As your Martin County Commissioner, I will be dedicated to ensuring that Martin County’s public safety departments, police and fire rescue, have the staffing, tools, equipment, training and resources they need to do their jobs safely and to continue to provide the highest level of service to Martin County residents.
Keep Property Taxes Low
Maintain the property millage rate at its current level. Absent a housing recession, property tax already has built in increases as property values rise. Additional taxes, such as sales taxes, which the county receives a portion of, increase with increasing sales and the price of goods and services. Government, like any family or business, must live within its means.
Preserve More Land
As a governmental entity and in coordination with non-profits facilitate the acquisition and preservation of environmentally sensitive and desirable lands.
Advocate for Term Limits
Hearing new voices and seeing new ideas emerge is beneficial in government and life. I support term limits for the County Commission for two terms and believe this should be put forth as a referendum item for Martin County voters. Term limits provide the opportunity to elect commissioners with fresh eyes and experiences to address their needs and concerns.
In the words of Thomas Jefferson: “My reason for fixing them in office for a term of years, rather than for life, was that they might have an idea that they were at a certain period to return into the mass of the people and become the governed instead of the governors which might still keep alive that regard to the public good that otherwise they might perhaps be induced by their independence to forget."
Operational Efficiency & Judicious Spending
Though there are clear differences in the objectives and measurables of government as compared to business enterprises, with respect to operational efficiency and budgeting government should run like a business. Every tax dollar is precious and government representatives are charged with ensuring each dollar is spent wisely and in accord with the needs and desires of the citizenry.
Support for Sewers / Everglades Restoration
The county needs to work to accelerate the transition from septic to sewer. We also need to work with our state and federal representatives to ensure full funding of the everglades restoration project and increase efforts to clean up Lake Okeechobee and limit big sugar.
